Society of Arts and Letters, founded in 1888 in Moscow K.S.Alekseevym ( Stanislavski ), director A.F.Fedotovym (which Stanislavski later wrote : ” Talk to him and rehearsals were the best school for me “), artist F.L. Company goals and objectives were formulated as follows : ” Moscow Society of Art and Literature aims to promote knowledge of its members in the field of art and literature, to promote the development of fine tastes, and also allow for the expression and contribute to the development stage, musical, literary and artistic talents. To this end, the Company has, with proper permission, dramatic- musical school, but not except by special government approval for the rules thereof. In addition, the Company may arrange, in compliance with generally established rules and orders of the government, stage, musical, literary, Drawing and family mornings and evenings, art exhibitions, concerts and performances. ” Company’s charter was approved by the Minister of the Interior August 7, 1888, while the charter school by the Society – Minister of Education on 29 September of the same year. The opening was held November 5, 1888 in the newly renovated premises on Tverskaya Street 37, where previously housed the Pushkin Theater ( entreprise A.A.Brenko ). The first meeting of the Society was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of M. Schepkin. In the book, My Life in Art, Stanislavsky recalls the grand opening of the Company : “All intellectuals were present on the opening night of the Company. Founders thanked him, and me in particular, for what we’ve put together all under one roof ; assured us that this long-awaited merger of artists with artists, musicians and scientists… A few days later the first performance of the Company’s dramatic. ” Held on December 8, 1888, as stated in the program, “the first executive meeting of the amateur troupe “, ie first performance – Alexander Pushkin ‘s The Miserly Knight, George Dandin by Moliere and scene of the tragedy A.F.Fedotova Godunov. In the early 1890s the Society was headed Stanislavsky. Under his leadership of the fans was created company with high professional skills and a deep understanding of the new challenges of art, later formulated by Stanislavski in his theoretical writings and in the practice of the Moscow Art Theatre. Stanislavsky debut as a director on 11 March 1889 ( one-act play Gnedich burning letters ). The summer of 1890 the Society of Arts and Letters has moved to a small room at Cook Street, and in 1891 after a fire performances were transferred to German club room on Sofiyka (now Cannon Street, Central House of Artists ). Here, February 8, 1891 the premiere of Leo Tolstoy’s Fruits of Enlightenment – in the play clearly defined social character design director Stanislavsky. The most significant productions until 1898 ( the establishment of the Moscow Art Theatre ) considered K.Gutskova Uriel Acosta, Othello and Much Ado About Nothing Shakespeare, The Sunken Bell G.Gauptmana and other performances. After retiring from the Company of the Stanislavsky and a significant part of the drama club actors headed N.N.Arbatov.
